Clarenville, July 15, 2006 – Discovery Collegiate’s Spirited F-Slot Group received the 2005 Lourdes Gregorio Rayel Outstanding Youth Award last June 22, 2006 in Bonavista. This annual Oikos Global Award is given to individuals or youth organizations that made a difference in the lives of their peers.

Both the Spirited F-Slot Group and the Discovery Collegiate received certificates and financial reward worth $500.00. Derek Elliott, educational psychologist and member of the Oikos Global Award Committee (OGAC), presented the award during Discovery Collegiate’s assembly. Each of the group’s 11 members also received individual certificates.

The award’s proud recipients are: Stacey Cheater, Joshua Devereaux, Robyn Mackey, Robyn Maloney-Brown, Samantha Stead, Jennifer Whiffen, Ashley Brown, Shiann Fisher, Amanda Little, Jenna Little, and Stephen Mackey.

“The group’s activities and initiatives have made a major impact among students and their communities,” said Dr. Michael Rayel, OGAC Chair. The F-Slot Spirited Group played a key role in the delivery of the “Provincial Student Leadership Conference” hosted by Discovery Collegiate. In this conference, considered the biggest school event in the province with more than 500 attendees, the group gave presentations on relevant topics such as leadership, suicide, and communication.

In addition, the group organized anti-bullying campaign and suicide prevention learning sessions. In the process, they successfully mobilized and helped many students, and had solicited the support of various community agencies. These learning initiatives benefited not only their school but also other schools and the surrounding communities.

The Lourdes Gregorio Rayel Outstanding Youth Award, a component of the Oikos Global Award, is intended to recognize and honor young individuals or youth organizations that have made a difference in the lives of their peers. The Oikos Global Award Committee includes Lisa Brown, Derek Elliot, Mona Romaine-Elliot, Natalie Moody, Michael G. Rayel, and Evelyn Tilley.
